2020 YEAR END UPDATE

Dear Friends of Maddie's Promise,

Rare childhood cancer doesn’t stop and neither will Maddie’s Promise. COVID-19 might have presented challenges in 2020, but it did not sideline our focus or our mission to support critically needed research for rare pediatric cancers. We are so grateful for the continued support of our community. As we wrap up 2020, we wanted to share some of our accomplishments.

Contributions to Impactful Research:

  • “Maddie’s Project” at Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute - This initiative involves the testing of specific tumor genetics to determine potential targeted drug therapies. This type of research is rarely done in pediatric cancer yet it is critical to improving outcomes. Our direct contribution allowed this project to become a reality, one where a child in Florida with Rhabdomyosarcoma (Rhabdo) is directly benefiting from the project -- with the opportunity that more will follow.

  • Entinostat research at Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute - Rhabdo is known to be aggressive and mutate to resist therapies. Entinostat has shown potential to block this resistance and make available therapies more effective. Maddie’s Promise has contributed to the funding required to get this drug closer to a Phase II Clinical Trial.

  • The “Butterfly Project” with the Mayo Clinic - Maddie’s Promise was asked to collaborate with the Mayo Clinic on a grant application for the “Butterfly Project.” We are very excited about the potential to change the course of how researchers understand and treat Rhabdo. Stay tuned for details!!

Presenting "Maddie's Project" by the Children's Cancer Therapy Development Institute

When we say we are channeling Maddie’s courage and kindness into cures, we mean it.

Our first donation has been given to Dr. Charles Keller at the Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute (cc-TDI). We are excited to announce that cc-TDI will name one of its research trials “Maddie’s Project" in honor of Maddie.

cc-TDI’s focus is on advanced disease and treatment options that are more effective and less toxic, making them a good match for Maddie’s Promise.

About Maddie’s Project

While a gene mutation is typical in cancer, some children (including Maddie), develop a second mutation which may be a useful target. The goal of Maddie’s Project is to create the groundwork for new drug treatments matched to a young patient’s exact tumor’s genetics.

We are truly proud to support innovative science in the name of Maddie and other children like her. Join our email list for updates on the trial and more.

In the meantime, please consider a tax-deductible donation to Maddie’s Promise, Inc., a registered 501c3 charitable organization (EIN: 84-3159035) in support of impactful rare pediatric cancer research.

To donate online, visit our homepage for the PayPal link or click the Venmo link in the footer. Checks may be payable to Maddie’s Promise, Inc. and sent to Maddie’s Promise, Inc., 5 Heather Lane, Hingham, MA 02043.

Double Header Soccer Event: Hingham vs. Plymouth South
Maddie was thrilled with her honorary captain role for Hingham High Girls Soccer.

Maddie was thrilled with her honorary captain role for Hingham High Girls Soccer.

Maddie’s Promise is a newly-formed foundation in honor of Maddie McCoy, Hingham Youth Soccer and Galway Rovers club soccer player. Sidelined by her illness from playing the sport she loved so much, the Hingham High girls soccer team made her an honorary captain last season. She passed away peacefully May 23, 2019 at the age of 11.

“Maddie loved sports and especially playing soccer. We had always hoped she'd play for Hingham High School someday. It meant so much to Maddie and us when the Hingham Varsity team made her an honorary captain last year. And now they have continued their amazing support, helping raise funds for research to help other kids like Maddie,“ says Ann and Steve McCoy, Maddie’s parents and Maddie’s Promise Founders.

The McCoy family is honored to be supported again by the Hingham High Soccer program. Along with the generous support of South Plymouth High Soccer, Hingham High Soccer will host the Boys and Girls Double Header Event on October 4th. Hingham Youth Soccer has set an audacious goal of $50K in support of Maddie’s Promise. The foundation’s mission: to provide funding for rare pediatric cancer offering the most promise.

“The treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma has not significantly evolved in decades. With many breakthroughs in adult cancers in recent years, most people don’t realize little is being offered to children with rare cancers. Currently just 4% of all research funds go to pediatric cancer and change is long overdue,” shared Ann and Steve McCoy.

About Maddie’s Promise

Full of determination, eleven-year-old Maddie McCoy made a promise even after sarcoma slowed her down. She spent her last few months making artwork to sell to help other kids with cancer and the homeless she saw while driving to treatment. Her sisters and friends took her promise on, selling art creations at pop-up stands to raise money. Inspired by Maddie’s creativity, courage and kindness, Maddie’s Promise is a rally cry to close the funding gap for rare pediatric cancer research, bringing hope to children like Maddie. For more information or to make a donation, visit maddiespromise.org. Be the change. Find the cure.
